SYMPTOMS OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT Why Miss Some Of Life's Most Important Sounds? The ability
to communicate with others is one of life's greatest desires. Typically a
hearing impairment doesn't come on suddenly but will occur over a number of
years. Due to the "gradual" decline in hearing, the hearing impaired individual
may not even realize that they are having a problem hearing and understanding.
Others (Spouse, Children or Friends) may notice that the impaired person
is missing out on conversation or playing the TV too loud but the hearing
impaired individual may be completely unaware that anything is different with
their hearing ability.
Fortunately, with today's advanced technology, hearing help is available for
many who may have been considered a poor candidate for amplification in the
past. The goal for the hearing impaired individual and hearing health care
professional alike should be to, "provide improved communication ability in
the majority of listening environments". It is important to understand that
even the finest, most advanced technology will not replace the natural sense of
hearing, therefore in many situations, even with corrective amplification
(hearing aid(s)), the hearing impaired individual will not function as well as a
"normal hearing" person.
